Both classes begin with 20 minutes SSR.

3rd period will see a bit of a movie about Shakespeare.

3rd period will do an exercise about poetry including the prologue to Romeo and Juliet.
HOMEWORK: bring a completely scanned copy of the prologue to class tomorrow.

3rd period your sonnets are due today. You may hand them in for half credit for the next two weeks. I will be giving you back your sonnets for revisions. What you have done is a first draft.

Begin with 20 minutes SSR, then 3rd period will learn about blank verse. 4th period will continue with lessons on sonnets.

3rd period: Today SSR then a lesson on sonnets

4th period will finish the sonnet assessment from yesterday.

How to Do the Response to Literature

We said (as best I remember; you have this in your notes):
-Eleven to twenty slides
-A title slide with the names of the students and the name of the book
-three to five slides telling the plot of the book
-two to three slides on significant ideas
-one to two slides on stylistic devices
-one to two slides on ambiguities and nuances
-three to five slides of quotes from the book or from people talking ABOUT the book; these are meant to be sprinkled throughout your presentation to support the other things

Remember that this is not an essay, it is a speech, so limit the number of words and make them big (size 32+)
Use notecards to remember specific things you want to say (I think I will require at least six notecards as part of the requirements)

For Korematsu speech folks you need three sources, 500 words total but other requirements stay the same.

a Works Cited with five or more entries including at least one book and one magazine.

Two short quotes; one from a book, one from a magazine.

Extra Credit available

The FTK library is working with the San Leandro Public Library. They have brought us about thirty books; almost all of them are fiction, and all of them are advanced copies from the publisher. They will bring more each month.

After a student reads a book, they complete a short survey; which will be sent to the publisher after I send it to the contact at the public library. It asks:

Name and age of the reader

"Would you like to nominate this book for Teens' Top Ten?" If they do nominate the book, they are asked to "please give a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the book that will make other teens want to read it."

"What did you like or not like about the cover? Did the cover relect the contents?"

"Describe the most compelling aspect of the book."

"Were you disappointed with the book for any reason? If so, what was disappointing?"

"Did you finish the book?"

"How would you rate this book?" They give a scale of 1 to 5.

The answers do not have to be lengthy, and they can give additional comments if they like.

Students can come to the FTK library and get a book before school, during lunch (with a pass), or after school.
