March 2

We'll begin with SSR. Then return to the issue of "Response to Literature". The idea is for us to design an activity that will fulfill the state's requirements while preserving some of your ability to control your own learning.
There are several tools at our disposal:
-Marcus has been pushing for oral examinations. Maybe you could all use the Smart Boards to make some kind of presentations?
-Some people don't like the computers but they are a good tool. Should internet research be part of this activity? Prezi? PowerPoint? Some other software?
-The state website recommends documents of 1,500 words or more. But we could change this if necessary.
-Deadline? I've been bad about this in the past. Perhaps we need a firm deadline right now--say three weeks? March 21?

HOMEWORK: 3rd period read "The Southland". It's probably too soon for another quiz but you never know.
4th period you are getting copies of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde today. Please read the first ten pages tonight.

How to Do the Response to Literature

We said (as best I remember; you have this in your notes):
-Eleven to twenty slides
-A title slide with the names of the students and the name of the book
-three to five slides telling the plot of the book
-two to three slides on significant ideas
-one to two slides on stylistic devices
-one to two slides on ambiguities and nuances
-three to five slides of quotes from the book or from people talking ABOUT the book; these are meant to be sprinkled throughout your presentation to support the other things

Remember that this is not an essay, it is a speech, so limit the number of words and make them big (size 32+)
Use notecards to remember specific things you want to say (I think I will require at least six notecards as part of the requirements)

For Korematsu speech folks you need three sources, 500 words total but other requirements stay the same.

Criteria

Deduction if not done or done incorrectly

A proper MLA heading (do the date correctly)
minus 10%

a Works Cited with five or more entries including at least one book and one magazine.
deduct 20%

A long quote
deduct 10%

Two short quotes; one from a book, one from a magazine.
deduct 10%

All quotes cited correctly using a parenthetical reference as per MLA style
deduct 10%

No spelling errors, no red squiggly lines
deduct 20%

1,500 words (includes heading and quotes)
deduct 10%

Not saved correctly; not shared correctly with me on Google docs
Potentially deduct 100%

Extra Credit available

The FTK library is working with the San Leandro Public Library. They have brought us about thirty books; almost all of them are fiction, and all of them are advanced copies from the publisher. They will bring more each month.

After a student reads a book, they complete a short survey; which will be sent to the publisher after I send it to the contact at the public library. It asks:

Name and age of the reader

"Would you like to nominate this book for Teens' Top Ten?" If they do nominate the book, they are asked to "please give a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the book that will make other teens want to read it."

"What did you like or not like about the cover? Did the cover relect the contents?"

"Describe the most compelling aspect of the book."

"Were you disappointed with the book for any reason? If so, what was disappointing?"

"Did you finish the book?"

"How would you rate this book?" They give a scale of 1 to 5.

The answers do not have to be lengthy, and they can give additional comments if they like.

Students can come to the FTK library and get a book before school, during lunch (with a pass), or after school.
