4th will do a Jekyll warmup then to the lab.

HOMEWORK:
3rd read pages 675-677. Quiz tomorrow.
4th prepare for some kind of quiz or activity tomorrow intended to test whether you actually read Jekyll & Hyde.

3rd we'll read and discuss more of The Odyssey.

3rd read 656-659. I will 'assess' whether you did the reading or not tomorrow.

4th read pages 23-27. We will discuss quotes tomorrow. I will try to spread things around so that I can figure out who is not doing the reading, if anyone.

Start with 20 minutes SSR, then we'll talk briefly about the book you are reading (The Odyssey or Jekyll and Hyde), then go to the lab to work on Response to Literature.

I'm expected to have firm deadlines on assignments so if you haven't given me the four paragraphs yet I'll deduct 10% off your grade for that assignment for each day it is late.

How to Do the Response to Literature

We said (as best I remember; you have this in your notes):
-Eleven to twenty slides
-A title slide with the names of the students and the name of the book
-three to five slides telling the plot of the book
-two to three slides on significant ideas
-one to two slides on stylistic devices
-one to two slides on ambiguities and nuances
-three to five slides of quotes from the book or from people talking ABOUT the book; these are meant to be sprinkled throughout your presentation to support the other things

Remember that this is not an essay, it is a speech, so limit the number of words and make them big (size 32+)
Use notecards to remember specific things you want to say (I think I will require at least six notecards as part of the requirements)

Extra Credit available

The FTK library is working with the San Leandro Public Library. They have brought us about thirty books; almost all of them are fiction, and all of them are advanced copies from the publisher. They will bring more each month.

After a student reads a book, they complete a short survey; which will be sent to the publisher after I send it to the contact at the public library. It asks:

Name and age of the reader

"Would you like to nominate this book for Teens' Top Ten?" If they do nominate the book, they are asked to "please give a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the book that will make other teens want to read it."

"What did you like or not like about the cover? Did the cover relect the contents?"

"Describe the most compelling aspect of the book."

"Were you disappointed with the book for any reason? If so, what was disappointing?"

"Did you finish the book?"

"How would you rate this book?" They give a scale of 1 to 5.

The answers do not have to be lengthy, and they can give additional comments if they like.

Students can come to the FTK library and get a book before school, during lunch (with a pass), or after school.
