Twenty minutes SSR then presentations today. I'll call name at random if I don't get volunteers. The idea here is to learn and improve your presentations. I'll offer criticisms and suggestions. This will not be graded except to see if you covered all the requirements and that you were ready on time. 3rd period will have a quiz. See yesterday's agenda for tonight's reading assignment.

We'll do the first slide presentations today. I hope for volunteers or I'll pull name from a hat. My goals: Talk about books. Let's not rush through these slide shows; let's use these as a springboard to inspire discussions about books. Write about books. Each day that we do this I'll ask you to write a short diary entry about one topic that came up during our discussions. If you have ideas for writing topics please raise your hand and let me know. HOMEWORK: 3rd period tonight read pages 684-686. Quiz tomorrow. Wednesday night read 691-694 (expect quiz); Thursday night read 694-696 (expect quiz).

Each class will have some kind of quiz to begin the class period, then you can return to "Response to Literature".

How to Do the Response to Literature

We said (as best I remember; you have this in your notes):
-Eleven to twenty slides
-A title slide with the names of the students and the name of the book
-three to five slides telling the plot of the book
-two to three slides on significant ideas
-one to two slides on stylistic devices
-one to two slides on ambiguities and nuances
-three to five slides of quotes from the book or from people talking ABOUT the book; these are meant to be sprinkled throughout your presentation to support the other things

Remember that this is not an essay, it is a speech, so limit the number of words and make them big (size 32+)
Use notecards to remember specific things you want to say (I think I will require at least six notecards as part of the requirements)

A proper MLA heading (do the date correctly)

a Works Cited with five or more entries including at least one book and one magazine.

Two short quotes; one from a book, one from a magazine.

All quotes cited correctly using a parenthetical reference as per MLA style

Extra Credit available

The FTK library is working with the San Leandro Public Library. They have brought us about thirty books; almost all of them are fiction, and all of them are advanced copies from the publisher. They will bring more each month.

After a student reads a book, they complete a short survey; which will be sent to the publisher after I send it to the contact at the public library. It asks:

Name and age of the reader

"Would you like to nominate this book for Teens' Top Ten?" If they do nominate the book, they are asked to "please give a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the book that will make other teens want to read it."

"What did you like or not like about the cover? Did the cover relect the contents?"

"Describe the most compelling aspect of the book."

"Were you disappointed with the book for any reason? If so, what was disappointing?"

"Did you finish the book?"

"How would you rate this book?" They give a scale of 1 to 5.

The answers do not have to be lengthy, and they can give additional comments if they like.

Students can come to the FTK library and get a book before school, during lunch (with a pass), or after school.
